Layoffs, Gourmet Cookies, and Recalibration

A few years ago, a friend of ours got laid off. She was devastated. She had worked for the company for over 5 years and was actively climbing the corporate ladder. She came early, she stayed late, and she was told countless times by her superiors that she was really making an impact and that she was an essential asset to their team. So you can imagine her surprise when the company went over a major restructuring and she lost her job.

We felt helpless as we sat on the sidelines and watched her go through all of the stages of grief. and even through all of our reassurances and attempts to remind her that this was an opportunity instead of an obstacle, she started to show signs of falling into a deep depression.

One weekend, we were talking with this friend and casually mentioned that another friend of ours was having a small birthday party and they had a caterer lined up to create these beautiful gourmet cookies, but the caterer had fallen through and the parents were desperately looking for another type of treat to serve at their event. For the first time in weeks, we saw our friends' eyes light up. She reminded us that before she got into the corporate world she had dreamed of being a chef and even went to culinary school. One conversation led to another and we were making a grocery list.

Two weeks later, our friend was delivering the most beautiful (and delicious cookies) we've ever seen to a very happy birthday girl. Not only did she save the birthday party, but she got an order for another batch of cookies before she even left the party!

Fast forward a few months and our friend was busier than ever, following her passion and doing something that she loves. She's eventually set up a website so people can make orders online.

Why are we sharing the story with you? Because it's a prime example of recalibration. Our friend was devastated when she was suddenly taken off the path she was certain she was supposed to be on. And instead of staying in her sadness, she decided to recalibrate, change directions, and move forward differently.

She took the experience that she had from culinary school plus all of the business fundamentals she used when working in the corporate world and combined it with her love of baking, and has found a brand new purpose for her life.

Being able to recalibrate in every aspect of your life is essential for growth. When things don't go your way, you can either quit and whine and complain and settle into a victim mentality, or you can feel your feelings, take a deep breath, and move forward on a different path. The choice is yours.

At The Bond Group, we specialize in guiding teams and organizations towards realizing their audacious goals and transforming their aspirations into tangible successes.
